Bluebird is so unassuming you might drive right past it and not know you’ve just passed one of the best pizzerias in the entire Bay Area. A lot of East Coast transplants have sung the praises of the sweet-savory red sauce and the exceptional crust, and you’d be hard pressed to find better versions of an East Coast pie than Bluebird. There’s something to please any pizza lover here, and the meatless and vegan options are varied and interesting.

Bluebird has garnered a solid takeout reputation in the Bay Area amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a straight-forward spot with pizza, salads and cannoli, that’s it. The pizza is New York style with a broad array of pies with several meatless and vegan options. The Kellie Grrrl is topped with mushrooms, green olives, Calabrian chilies, ricotta sauce, mozzarella and ricotta. Vegan pies are extra saucy with no cheese. The Heart of Glass features artichoke, mushroom, piquante peppers and spinach.

The East Bay has no shortage of pizzerias that claim to offer a real-deal East Coast slice, but only one that fully delivers on that promise. Bluebird has all the outward trappings: the Bruce Springsteen paraphernalia, the cozy booths, the low-key vibe. But the main thing is the pizza itself, with its crisp-bottomed but foldable crust, upward-curled pepperoni slices, tangy-sweet tomato sauce, and glorious slick of grease.
